A Historic Bronze for the Ukrainian Fencers’ Team: What We Know
In the team event, the “blue-yellows” were represented by a quartet including Daria Myroniuk, Alina Polozhuk, the new individual tournament champion Olha Sopyt, and Khrystyna Petrova.
Ukraine commenced their European Championship campaign with a victory over Moldova in the round of 16 (45:31). In the quarterfinals, the “blue-yellows” triumphed over their Hungarian opponents (45:39), before succumbing to the reigning European champions, Italy, in the fight for a spot in the final – 22:45.
Ukraine’s adversaries in the battle for bronze were the Spanish fencers, who had lost to the French team in their semi-final. Last year, Spain also reached the “bronze” final, where they defeated Poland.
The Ukrainian athletes remained undefeated through the first five bouts, establishing a 21:14 lead with four victories and one draw. Myroniuk and Polozhuk each won two encounters, while Sopyt drew her bout against Ariadna Tucker (5:5).
