Read in English

Brussels has already initiated efforts to develop a fresh sanctions package targeting Russia. Amid these developments, European allies of Ukraine plan to visit Washington to collaborate with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Key points:

  • Zelenskyy and Costa discussed Ukraine’s involvement in the SAFE initiative (Security Action for Europe).
  • Additional priorities include the nation’s progress toward EU membership and sanctions strategies.

EU and U.S. Collaborate on New Sanctions Against Russia

European Council President António Costa addressed this matter in a recent statement.

On September 5, he arrived in Uzhhorod for an official visit, where he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

During this visit, Costa emphasized the European Union’s commitment to substantially escalating sanctions pressure on Russia.

Critically, this effort will receive backing from the team of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The measures encompass both direct and secondary sanctions:

Additional economic actions aim to compel Russia to halt this war, cease killings, and end the conflict in Ukraine. Brussels has begun drafting a new sanctions package, and our European delegation will travel to Washington to coordinate with American partners.

According to Costa, Brussels officials are also deeply impressed by the reforms Ukraine continues to implement despite ongoing hostilities.

He stressed that this transformative work must persist.
